From Fez: Meknes, Volubilis and Moulay Idriss Day Trip

On a day excursion from Fez, see historic Moroccan structures, the famed Volubilis ruins, Moorish architecture, and thousand-year-old gates. Explore Meknes’ Medina, visit Volubilis’ medieval ruins, and visit the holy village of Moulay Idriss.

In a nice, air-conditioned vehicle, be picked up from your hotel or riad. Drive through Ain Lah and the beautiful Dam Achahad, as well as the Rif Mountains. Make frequent stops to take in the scenery, fresh air, and amazing photography.

First arrive to Volubilis, a well-preserved Roman town. Explore the ruins of the Arch of Basilica, Caracalla, and Capitoline Temple to learn about Roman history and culture. Take some time to walk about on your own and take some more great shots. Return to your car and proceed to your next destination, the holy Islamic town of Moulay-Idriss. Learn how Moulay Idriss I constructed this village. As you meander through a maze of spotless streets, take in the panoramic views, elongated squares, and green-tiled pyramids of the Zaouia.

Then proceed to Meknes, where you will have lunch at a local restaurant. Start your tour of Meknes once you’ve eaten. View the historic city walls and majestic gates from the 17th century. The Royal Palace, Berdane Bab, and Bab Khemis are all worth seeing. Then visit the Africa Bab Mansour and El Heri es-Souan,  massive granaries and stables constructed by Moulay Ismail’s soldiers. Make a pit stop at the Moulay Ismail Mausoleum, which was once the only mosque in Morocco that non-Muslims were allowed to attend. Visit the Place-El-Hedim monument before returning to Fez and being dropped off at your hotel.
